As you enter Snow Canyon, colors flood your eyes as you try to comprehend all of them at one time. Rich with reds, oranges, greens, pinks, purples, and many others from all the plants that grow there, Snow Canyon truly is an amazing place to be. With all of this beauty surrounding you, there are many trails placed so that you can hike in the midst of this wonderful scenery. These trails allow for you to get a much closer look and feel for the nature and wildlife that resides in this amazing canyon.
One trail that you can walk on to enjoy this wonderful view is called “Pioneer Names.” This trail is just a short, easy, half mile hike, but as you progress on, it is not just beauty you will see, but history will reveal itself to you. From the main road you just see red cliffs overlooking a beautiful canyon of color, but as you travel a little further, you begin to see how the trail received its name. Written on many of the cliffs above you as you travel on the trail are names of pioneers that passed through this canyon many years ago as well as the year they passed through it. The names stand out written in black and white against the bright red rock. They appear to be written in axel grease or etched into the rock so that they could last for a long time. These people wanted us to know that they were there, as you are when you hike the trail. They wanted the society of the future to be aware of the people of the past.
As you will notice from the picture above, there is the name of Albert Graf. While hiking in the park his name appears more than once but not along this trail. One of the other times you will see it is when you drive along the road. Maybe he marked it many times so people would know to follow the trail? Or maybe he just wanted to be remembered?
I believe that this rock as well as the trail that leads to it stands as a monument to have the names of these amazing men written upon these rocks. They deserve to be remembered for the great accomplishments they achieved for this city. The names on these rocks are not just decorations but history that has been written so we may know that they were in this valley at one point in time.
These trails, as well as Snow Canyon, have cultural value and significance to St. George, Utah because the pioneers walked through this place and helped to found the city. They traveled many months to reach this land and when they did it was only right for them to leave their mark so others would know of their existence. If it were not for these early travelers we may not have a place like we have today. It could still be an uninhabited desert and not a tourist attraction. They were the ones who set up this town. They built their homes and stores here, built a temple for religious purposes, found ways of finding food, and many more wonderful discoveries so that we could live in the great city that is here today.
The next time you enter the canyon be sure to travel along this trail and look at the significance it holds on the cliffs above you. It will be a sight you will never forget. You will truly appreciate the beauty around you as well as the historical value Snow Canyon has to offer.
